Wine Tasting with the Mousetrap

28/06/2024 • Carl Marsh •

The 40-minute ride from the Mousetrap to North Creake was a wonderful start to an even more wonderful day. We had booked a vineyard tour and wine tasting at Burn Valley Vineyard and were eagerly anticipating the event…

There are 9 vineyards in Norfolk, growing a variety of grapes. One of which, Bacchus is becoming increasingly popular because of the high-quality wine produced from it. Originating in Germany, the grape was first cultivated in the early 20th century by crossing a Silvaner x Riesling with Müller-Thurgau. The grape is named after the Roman god of wine, Bacchus, which underscores its cultural and historical significance. Today, the Bacchus grape is cultivated in several regions across the world, including England, Germany, Canada, and the United States. Its popularity has only continued to grow, thanks to its ability to produce wines with a wide range of flavours and aromas.

Like most other types of farming, wine production is a precarious business. Burn Valley planted 17,000 vines in 2016 over 12 acres/4 hectares, presenting a considerable financial investment. The accompanying talk alongside the wine tasting made us realise the difficulty in firstly, setting up the initial planting, but after that managing the vines from season to season. So many things can go wrong and wreck the grape harvest.

We quickly became aware that there is a lot of work behind the creation of a bottle of wine and like most food and drink products, as consumers we are quite divorced from the production process. It is the difficulty and challenge of overcoming events to bring the harvest to fruition which is probably why winemakers (across the world) are so passionate about their product. A trait we’ve historically applied to the French, until our new home-grown pioneers took up the challenge!

Take a vineyard tour and wine tasting when staying at the Mousetrap

We tasted a variety of different wines made from grape varieties such as Solaris, Bacchus and Chardonnay. The talk accompanying the wines provided fascinating facts and insights about vine heritage and why those grape varieties were chosen to be grown at Burn Valley.

The Burn Valley team are very professional and hospital. The wines were delicious and served impeccably by the hosts. The food platters which we ordered to accompany the wines were splendid and of a similar high quality to the wines.

Whether you are a wine aficionado, or just a casual drinker, this is a day not to be missed. I would urge you, whether staying at the Mousetrap, or anywhere else in Wells, to book a wine tasting. The vineyard tour is unaccompanied, and you can walk around freely and explore the vines, which gives you a full appreciation of the wine when you are tasting it. It’s only a 15- minute car ride to Burn Valley Vineyard tucked away behind North Creake, or like us you can cycle there in 40 minutes (we took a detour through Burnham Market on the way back to extend our day out…).

The actual tasting takes place in a marquee attached to the wine production warehouse, which is lined by fascinating machinery – used to help manage the growing and harvest. But make no mistake, wine is a love affair for the Burn Valley team with most of the work still done by hand…

Mick P, Doncaster – Subscriber Free Weekend Winner – Visit Report

21/05/2024 • Carl Marsh •

Mick P from Doncaster recently enjoyed his SUBSCRIBER DRAW FREE WEEKEND…

He said:
“We have just spent a long weekend at Mousetrap, Wells . I must say what a total gem this place is. You couldn’t have a better location for a holiday stay. The cottage has everything you need – 3 large bedrooms easily accommodating 6 . The side annex room was perfect for my elderly mother which has its own lobby entrance toilet and really nice walk-in shower perfect and private . The cottage location makes it perfect to explore the north Norfolk coast We found a beautiful gravel beach on the way to Cromer called Salthouse – a must visit . I would totally recommend a stay at the Mousetrap. 100% not to be missed.

Paula Price enjoying herself on the beach at Wells next the Sea during her free weekend after husband Mick was drawn as 2004 free weekend subscriber winnerMick’s wife, Paula said:
“My family stayed at the Mousetrap recently and we absolutely loved it. It was spacious. It was very clean. It had underfloor heating. It had everything that you wanted in the kitchen. It had the most amazing double mattress, and I had the best night’s sleep. There’s a smart TV so you can access your Netflix, etc. There is also free Wi-Fi .

The cottage consists of an open plan kitchen dining room lounge area. There are two very large leather sofas which are very comfortable and could easily sleep two children, To the right of the lounge there is a bathroom, a twin room, and a double room. There are more than enough clean towels and extra pillows duvets etc. There is also plenty of storage. To the left there is another double room which is a twin that has its own toilet and shower which is great if you are taking your parents, for example so they can have some privacy.

The cottage is situated right in the heart  of Wells opposite a beautiful church. There are lovely shops and places to eat. We ate at the Golden Fleece (but I do not recommend it). It has been taken over and it is not anything like how it used to be. However, the food in the Globe looked delicious. Also, the food at the café called Bang in Wells is delicious. There’s also a pub called the Edinburgh, which is reasonably priced and it’s a bit more ‘local’.  I like it in there.

My husband took his bike and went through the pine forest to Holkham Hall. I’ve had Sunday lunch there on a separate trip (Victoria) – it’s expensive but it’s beautiful and it’s worth it for a special occasion.

I like to run – so from the cottage down the coastal path to the bottom and back to the cottage exactly 5 km. it’s something I love to do every time I visit Wells .

The beach is beautiful, and my kids like to crab at the harbour. My husband took them to a place called Salthouse pebble beach which he said was wonderful and the kids loved it.

I would highly recommend the Mousetrap it’s a perfect place in a perfect location. It’s immaculately clean and I can’t wait to go back…”

The Final North Norfolk Triathlon?

01/11/2023 • Carl Marsh •

It was a ‘good news, bad news’ story, when we received good feedback from guests using the Mousetrap as their base for the North Norfolk Triathlon. The ‘bad news’ is – it might be the last one..?

The Triathlon has long been a fixture in the Wells calendar, usually taking place mid-September. The actual date changes slightly, as does the time of the event, because the swim portion of the three disciplined event has to coincide with slack tide as it takes place in the quayside channel. Late summer often see’s competitors training in the channels practicing their swims and running up the path towards the beach along with the normal throng of joggers.

Jason T:
“Spent a wonderful weekend there while taking part in a triathlon. Great location for running, cycling and swimming in the channel. All within easy reach of the Mousetrap and facilities allow for locking up bikes outside and drying wetsuits in courtyard. Very nice rewards available after activities including an excellent coffee shop on the quayside and plenty of pubs to choose from.”

North Norfolk Triathletes use the Mousetrap as their base

Clive G:
“Stayed here while competing in the North Norfolk Triathlon. Really well set up for a weekend of activity – solid bike racks at the front, outdoor space for drying wetsuits and the owner was kind enough to arrange some additional bike locks if needed- we didn’t. Wells is a very safe place to stay! Really close to the Quay for the event and for training swims – it’s so well located for training as well as competing. Owner apparently has competed as well so is very knowledgeable about good run routes, cycle routes etc. Will definitely be staying there again.”

The event consists of a 1.5K sea swim in Wells Harbour channel. Participants then exit the water into the quayside ‘transition area’ Bikes racked, they quickly changing into dry gear for a 40Km cycle through the countryside behind Wells. The final discipline is the 10Km beach run. The event attracts competitors from across the UK, with several professional triathletes competing alongside local club triathletes and those hardy enough to just ‘give it a go’!

As the triathletes congregated for the pre-event briefing from Robert Smith (MBE), Harbour Master, it was announced that this would be the last Triathlon organised by the Wells Harbour Maritime Trust, after 15 years of running the event. Begging the question from many disappointed regulars, who might take it over? While we await the answer here are some events that might interest you, using the Mousetrap as your base…

North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd Sep

20/08/2023 • Carl Marsh •

If like us, here at the Mousetrap, you like your food, then you’ll love the North Norfolk Food & Drink Festival.

North Norfolk Food and Drink FestivalNow in it’s 14th year it has become firmly established on the Norfolk calendar and with good reason.
There has been a gradual increase in first class Food and Drink manufacturers across Norfolk, but specifically within North Norfolk.
Some of the artisan producers, have gone on to become mainstrean volume suppliers to national supermarkets.
But most still continue to be family run businesses crafting their produce with passion and care.
The fertile soils of East Anglia combined with an agreeable climate continue to attract growers and producers, especially in the wine sector which is booming.

This year, once again, the festival is hosted by Holkham Hall, who are themselves a major agricultural producer of crops including: malting barley, wheat, maize, oilseed rape, sugarbeet, peas, potatoes and rye, in addition to cattle and sheep.

The festival, held in the Walled Gardens at Holkham Hall, runs between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, September 3, and Sunday, September 4 and is FREE TO ENTER (£5 Car Park charge).

If you want to experience this wonderful event the Mousetrap has a two night stay. Mousetrap sleeps 6 and at only £400 that works out less than £35 per person per night.

MUSEUMS OF NORTH NORTH NORFOLK – ACCESSIBLE FROM THE MOUSETRAP

10/07/2023 • Carl Marsh •

North Norfolk has many museums and historic sites, open to visitors, explaining the area’s fascinating and unique heritage. The Mousetrap is an ideal, central base to visit them all…

Although the beach is probably the main attraction during summer, if the weather is a bit overcast or you are looking for something different to do with the kids, consider visiting one of North Norfolks Museums.

Norfolk has been invaded and occupied in turn by the Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans (as well as WW2 incursions by the Nazis!). Leaving North Norfolk strewn with fascinating objects. Ideal for days out and family fun. Have a look at our video to wet your appetite, then research further…

  • North Norfolk Visitor Centre – Deep History Coast – The stretch of coastline between Weybourne and Cart Gap is known as the Deep History Coast because it is where several prehistoric discoveries were made. These were so important, that they changed history as we know it. Finds include the West Runton Mammoth (over 600,000 years old) and the oldest hand-axe found in North West Europe (550,000 years old) in Happisburgh
  • Houghton Hall – The Soldier Museum – The 6th Marquess of Houghton Hall started collecting model soldiers as a schoolboy in 1928. He went on to serve in the Royal Dragoons during WW2 and was awarded the Military Cross. His compilation is one of the largest personal collections in the world and there are now some 20,000 models on display as well as an interesting array of assorted militaria, including fine military prints and paintings and a selection of vintage helmets and regimental drums.
  • Cromer Museum – Step inside a cosy Victorian fisherman’s cottage and imagine what it was like to live in Cromer at the end of the 19th Century. Browse the huge archive of historic photographs and illustrations of the town and discover Cromer’s history as a Victorian seaside resort with its fine hotels and scandalous mixed bathing. See an amazing collection of Norfolk fossils in the Geology Gallery revealing why Cromer is renowned as a geological area of international importance and find out about the West Runton mammoth and the Deep History Coast. Marvel at a cast of the skull of a Mosasaur – a huge marine reptile common off the north Norfolk coast over 80 million years ago.
  • Holkham Hall – Visit this Palladian palace in the north Norfolk countryside and discover a beautiful place rich in history, architecture and wildlife. Visit the magnificent 18th century hall and explore the six acres of walled garden. The Marble Hall is a spectacular entrance with its 50ft pressed plaster dome ceiling with stairs leading to magnificent state rooms displaying superb collections of original furniture, ancient statuary as well as tapestries and paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Claude, Gainsborough and Gaspar Poussin.
  • Museum of the Broads – The riverside musuem tells the story from Roman times through medieval peat digging, to the holiday makers, sailors and environmentalists of today. Discover the boats of the Broads and see how people’s working lives shaped the landscape. The collection shows how people have exploited the land and the waterways for food, transport and leisure. There are plenty of activities for all to enjoy including a boat trip along these man-made waterways.
  • Walsingham Shirehall and Bridewell Prison – The Shirehall is Walsingham’s Georgian Courtroom and local history museum as well as the visitor entrance for the Walsingham Abbey Grounds. It was built in 1500 as a hostel for important visitors to the neighbouring Augustinian priory. In the late 18th century up to 1971, it became Walsingham’s court house. Today, you can explore this courtroom and even try a seat in the dock or the judge’s chair! The museum’s displays tell the stories of Walsingham, a place of pilgramage dating back to the 11th century. A five minute walk away is Walsingham Bridewell and is almost completely unaltered since the last prisoners were let out. Standing on the site of a former leper hospital, the prison was set up as a House of Correction in 1598, to house vagrants and beggars and train them in useful trades.
  • Mundesley Maritime Museum – One of England’s smallest museums, Mundesley Maritime Museum is big on exhibits, with ships’ wheels, navigation lights and lifesaving paraphernalia. A display illustrates over 200 years of the town’s maritime history telling its stories of lifeboats, shipwrecks, fishing, locally found fossils and railways. The first floor is a coastguard lookout with powerful binoculars for visitors to use. It is used today by National Coastwatch as a lookout and visitors are welcome to watch them at work.
  • RAF Air Defence Museum Neatishead – Explore the country’s only original Cold War Operations Room, which formed a critical link in the RAF’s Command and Control system in the years following WW2. Housed entirely in RAF buildings, including the hardened Grade 2 listed 1942 radar operations building, the museum provides a unique window into the history of radar covering the period of WW2 to the Cold War. There are 24 exhibition rooms and over 10,000 display items.
  • Langham Dome – Built in the early 1940s on the edge of RAF Langham, the Dome was where anti-aircraft gunners were trained with innovative technology of the time. Moving images were projected onto the inside of the building, teaching trainees how to attack enemy aircraft. Today, the Dome offers a unique opportunity to journey back in time and experience what life was like for those who served at RAF Langham.
  • RNLI Henry Blogg Museum – This free to enter, family friendly museum, relives the courageous history of life-saving at sea in Cromer. In 1805, the first lifeboat was brought to Cromer and the brave volunteers have won many medals for their amazing efforts over the past 200 years. Henry Blogg is the most decorated RNLI crewmember after serving on the lifeboats for 53 years. During WW2, Blogg was coxswain of the lifeboat H.F Bailey and this boat is on display in the museum. See model lifeboats, movies, photos and Blogg’s medal collection.
  • Sheringham Museum – This museum on the seafront in Sheringham, tells the history of the town through its people and seafaring heritage. Inside you can walk amongst an historic fleet of lifeboats and fishing boats. Exhibitions reveal fascinating stories and there are interesting artefacts on display including a zeppelin bomb that dropped on the town in WW1. Climb the viewing tower for great views of the North Sea, Sheringham and the surrounding countryside. There is a year-round events programme to enjoy, suitable for the whole family.
  • Fakenham Museum of Gas and History – This is the only surviving town gasworks in England and Wales. Housed in the former gasworks, the museum is home to equipment previously used for the manufacture of gas from coal. The gasworks ceased production in 1965, following the discovery of Natural Gas in the North Sea. The museum is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, a prestigious and rare distinction for an industrial site and provides an insight into the cultural, social and industrial heritage of Fakenham, with heating and domestic equipment displays.
  • William Marriott Museum – This museum in Holt, tells the story of East Anglia’s railways and in particular William Marriott’s Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. Marriott masterminded and ran the railway network that opened up the Broads and the north Norfolk coast to visitors to the area. Most of these lines were closed in 1959 but a section was kept open to create the Poppy Line and the William Marriott Museum with its displays of artefacts and bygones. Outside, the full 5 ¼ miles of the Poppy Line is packed with working museum items, such as the general railway infrastructure, rolling stock and a truly historic signalling system. It is also well worth a trip on the nostalgic North Norfolk Railway itself, with its spectacular sea views.
  • Thursford Collection – This working museum is home to mechanical organs, Wurlitzer shows, silent movies, old fashioned fairground carousels and static displays of both fairground engines and road engines, as well as all kinds of related memorabilia. During November and December, the museum houses the nationally acclaimed Christmas Spectacular shows with a cast of 130 professional singers, dancers and musicians, and also the amazing animated Santa’s Magical Journey and visit to Father Christmas.
  • Felbrigg Hall – The heart of the Felbrigg estate was built up before the Norman conquest and enlarged by the Felbrigg family. The Norfolk Windhams family took over the estate in the mid-15th century. Today, the house is mostly intact apart from a room blown up by a fireworks experiment the 18th century. The large collections in the Hall are original to the families who made Felbrigg their home, including the outstanding Gothic library. Well worth a trip to the village of Felbrigg near Cromer, for a step back in time.
  • Blickling Hall – Philip Kerr, 11th Marquis of Lothian, left the Blickling Estate to the National Trust in 1940, and he is vital to its story. The story of the estate unfolds over a thousand years. The renowned landscape with its hedges and narrow tree-lined lanes has changed little over the centuries. Visitors can explore the parts of the house Kerr used privately and photographs, sounds and objects will create a sense of what it would have been like to be a house guest in the period leading up to the Second World War.

Mousetrap goes FTTP High Speed Fibre Broadband

03/11/2022 • Carl Marsh •

You might have heard various politicians banging on about high speed fibre? Rollout comes to Wells!

We quickly grabbed the opportunity and MOUSETRAP now has shiny, new, superfast fibre broadband. Full-fibre broadband (FTTP: Fibre to the Premises) is a brand-spanking new technology, replacing current broadband services often running over copper lines between the cabinet and the home.

So, what are the benefits of FTTP (and to guests of the Mousetrap)?

FTTP at the MousetrapFaster Speeds
Although our new service is based on a 80Mb/s download, full fibre can reach speeds of up to 1,000Mb/s (1Gb/s), downloading a 6 season box set in 1 min 25 seconds!

It’s More Reliable
The fibre optic cable that is used to connect you to full-fibre broadband is built to last and much less susceptible to damage which can lead to faults. The new technology can last 40 years, while the current copper cable lasts just 5 years. So you can expect to have little-to-no drop outs and fast speeds all the time!

FTTP is perfect for busy homes, with lots of devices to connect. Phones, iPads, TVs, PC’s but also new smart devices, like fridges, lights, security systems, thermostats and more.

Fibre to the Premises. high speeb fibre broadband at the MousetrapImproved Security
FTTP is the most secure way you can get a broadband connection into the home. That’s because the data moves close to the speed of light, making it hard for criminals to interrupt or intercept the flow of data compared to other technologies.

Switching Speeds & Future Changes Are Easier
Once on a new FTTP connection is installed, changing speed is quick and easy. However, for the moment our new 80Mb/s, connection should be fast enough for even the most tech enabled guest and their family.

No More Sharing (Contention)
On a current legacy connection, homes will often be sharing the connection lines up to the cabinet (with as many as 74 other homes!) FTTP gives a home a dedicated fibre optic line.

WFH at the MousetrapDownside!
Unfortunately, with FFTP you can’t get a ‘landline’ because of the type of connection that a landline uses. However nearly all Mousetrap guests have mobiles and landline connections as a whole are unlikely to exist in a few years’ time!

WFH (working from home) is now perfectly possible from the Mousetrap. Making 4 night mid-week breaks more attractive than ever. So, what are you waiting for? Book Now!

Mousetrap is a spacious family friendly holiday home with 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6, free car parking and free high speed wi-fi.

Cycle Wells and North Norfolk in October from the Mousetrap

05/10/2022 • Carl Marsh •

cycling at the Mousetrap

October is a great month to explore Wells and the North Norfolk Coast by bike, as it’s cooler than high summer, so you don’t get too hot and sweaty.

cycling at the Mousetrap

Did you know there is a 3,750-mile route that travels the coastal areas of all countries that border the North Sea, it passes through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland and of course Norfolk. Not ideal for a short break in Wells! But an indicator of the great cycling available.

There is also a new Norfolk cycle route, just developed, called Rebellion Way: https://www.cyclinguk.org/press-release/new-long-distance-cycling-route-norfolk-announced

One of our favourite routes is what we call the ‘Holkham Loop’, it’s easily accessible from the Mousetrap and mainly off road, apart from a few quiet lanes before entering Holkham Hall. The route takes you through the fields behind the Mousetrap, through the grounds of Holkham Hall, returning via tracks running parallel with the beach. We’re happy to supply directions – just email us.

A stay at the Mousetrap is a great way to explore the cycling opportunities – the rear courtyard garden provides secure space to leave the bikes at night and there is side access so there’s no need to cart bikes through the house. Bring your own bikes, or hire from one of several companies in and around Wells, such as ‘On Yer Bike Cycle Hire’.
